House (Bhava)

Bhava (Bhāva) is the "house" of Indian astrology, a sector of the birth chart. The name comes from the Sanskrit "bhava" — "state," "condition." There are twelve bhavas in all, each standing for a particular area of life. It is one of the primary tools for reading a birth chart.

Place in the system

Panchanga describes the state of the sky. The lagna is the rising sign at the moment of birth. Bhavas are chart sectors counted from the lagna. Schools disagree on exactly how to draw the sector boundaries: in the most widespread calculation, whole-sign houses, the entire sign of the lagna becomes the 1st house, and the remaining bhavas are entire signs that follow it in order; another approach builds houses from the exact degrees of the cusps, so that a planet near a sign boundary can land in a different house than it would under the first method. This site uses the whole-sign calculation.

The twelve bhavas are twelve areas of life:

1. Tanu (1st house, also called the lagna bhava) — the person, the body, health.
2. Dhana (2nd house) — wealth, speech, family.
3. Bhratri (3rd house) — siblings, courage, short trips.
4. Sukha (4th house) — mother, home, peace of mind.
5. Putra (5th house) — children, creativity, intellect.
6. Ripu (6th house) — enemies, illness, debts.
7. Kalatra (7th house) — spouse, partnership.
8. Ayush (8th house) — longevity, inheritance, hidden matters.
9. Bhagya (9th house) — fortune, spirituality, father.
10. Karma (10th house) — career, status.
11. Labha (11th house) — gains, friends, the fulfillment of desires.
12. Vyaya (12th house) — expenses, losses, liberation.

Houses are also grouped into larger classes that set their weight when reading a chart. The kendras — the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses — are the angular houses, the chart's structural pillars. The trikonas — the 1st, 5th and 9th — are houses of fortune and dharma. The dusthanas — the 6th, 8th and 12th — are the difficult houses of loss, crisis and rupture. The upachayas — the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th — are houses that grow through effort over time. The same house can belong to several classes at once — the 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, and the 6th is both a dusthana and an upachaya — and tradition reads these overlaps as meaningful.

Practical meaning

Bhavas are the primary tool for interpreting a birth chart. Each bhava is tied to a specific area of life, and planets landing in a bhava affect that area: a planet colors the house with its own nature, while the house's ruling planet carries the house's theme to wherever that ruler itself stands.

The division into kendras, trikonas, dusthanas and upachayas sets a planet's weight in the chart: landing in a kendra or trikona traditionally strengthens a benefic planet, while ruling or standing in a dusthana calls for a more careful reading regardless of the planet's nature.

In daily practice

Bhavas are a constant backdrop. Knowing your bhavas lets you understand which areas of life are stronger in your chart and which are weaker.

Knowing your bhavas is also useful for planning: transits of the planets through your bhavas show which areas are active right now.

Knowing your bhavas is useful for self-understanding too: different bhavas are tied to different qualities, and understanding your own helps you grow.

How much a bhava is personally yours is refined by the lagna. Bhavas are counted from the lagna, and knowing your own lagna is the key to understanding your bhavas.
