Budha-Aditya Yoga is Mercury close to the Sun: mental clarity, good for study and analysis.
Budha-Aditya Yoga (Budha-āditya yoga) — a combination of Mercury and the Sun in the same sign, with a longitude difference under 14°. The name comes from the two planets' names: "Budha" (Mercury) + "Aditya" (the Sun). Tradition links it to clarity of mind and an aptitude for study.
Place in the system
Yogas and combinations describe stable combinations of grahas and their joint influence. This article covers the transit reading of Budha-Aditya (gochara) — by Mercury's and the Sun's current positions in the sky; the same combination in the birth chart is read separately and isn't covered here.
The condition for the conjunction — a longitude difference between Mercury and the Sun under 14° — as a rule means Mercury is simultaneously in astangata: tradition sets the combustion limit at about 14° for direct motion and lower, about 12°, for retrograde motion. Part of tradition reads this as weakening the yoga itself, and doesn't consider its effect unconditionally positive; another part of the schools puts the weight on the conjunction with the Sun itself, reading it as a strengthening of mind and authority. The disagreement here is a school one, not an error on either side.
The window is set by the more mobile of the two — Mercury: it approaches the Sun and pulls away from it several times a year, and each such pass lasts anywhere from a week and a half to a month.
Practical meaning
Budha-Aditya Yoga is a combination for intellectual work, communication, and study. Tradition links it to clarity of mind, but not as an unconditional good — see the astangata caveat above.
In Indian folk practice, Budha-Aditya Yoga is a time considered suited to exams, to important negotiations, to public speaking.
In daily practice
Budha-Aditya Yoga is a window for intellectual work. If Mercury and the Sun are currently close together, tradition holds this a good time for decisions that call for a clear head.
Budha-Aditya also suits study: courses, reading, learning something new.
Budha-Aditya also suits communication: important letters, calls, presentations.
Tara Bala refines not the combination itself, but how favourable the particular day it falls on is for you.
