Vyatipata is yoga of upheaval.

Vyatipata (Vyatipata) is the seventeenth of the 27 yogas of the panchanga. By count it's yoga #17, right after Siddhi. The name comes from the Sanskrit "vyatipata" — "catastrophe," "upheaval," "collapse." Tradition counts Vyatipata among the unfavorable yogas: important worldly undertakings are usually avoided on this day.

Place in the system

Yoga is the fourth limb of the panchanga, counted by the sum of the longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vyatipata is seventeenth in the 27-part cycle, from 213°20′ to 226°40′ of combined longitude.

In the muhurta classification, Vyatipata is counted in the "ashubha" group (unfavorable); the makeup of the shubha/ashubha groups differs between muhurta schools — a general overview is in the yoga section. The connection to upheaval and collapse is the yoga's main note.

Practical meaning

In the tradition of choosing a muhurta, Vyatipata is held unfavorable for important worldly undertakings: travel, trade dealings, weddings, laying a foundation, public performances. Muhurta practice counts Vyatipata among the yogas that undertakings aren't set on.

The Vyatipata background works through upheaval. This isn't a day of drawn-out difficulty — tradition reads such a day as a time when the usual course of events can break suddenly rather than gradually.

In daily practice

Vyatipata is a day on which it's better not to start anything major. A wedding, a move, a major deal, a public performance — all of this asks to be moved to a neighboring favorable yoga or tithi.

It's good on this day to spend time in quiet: meditation, reading, light housework. Vyatipata doesn't forbid rest and turning inward — it warns against a sharp step into the unknown.

Vyatipata also suits the practice of humility, accepting what isn't in your hands. Such a day suits noticing where you're used to controlling more than you can, and leaving the outcome to circumstances.

How favorable this day is for you personally is refined by Tara Bala — a count from your birth nakshatra. Vyatipata sets a general background of caution and turning inward, and the personal layer shows whether that background fits your state today.
