Ekadashis

Rama Ekadashi is associated with the goddess Lakshmi (Rama).

Rama (Ramā) is the ekadashi of krishna paksha in the eighth lunar month, Kartika (October-November). The name comes from "Ramā" — one of the names of Lakshmi, goddess of abundance. Tradition connects the fast on this day with prosperity, cleansing of sins, and spiritual liberation.

Place in the system

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the lunar month. Rama falls eleventh in the dark half of Kartika, in the last days of Chaturmasya, immediately before Prabodhini — the ekadashi of shukla paksha in the same month, on which Vishnu awakens.

Ramā is a name of Lakshmi as the goddess of abundance; the ekadashi is named for her.

Practical meaning

The Rama fast is favorable for prosperity, for cleansing sins, for spiritual liberation. Tradition connects it with the idea that sincere prayer on this day draws Lakshmi's blessing.

The Rama background works through abundance and generosity. It is a day on which attention turned to plenty and gratitude meets a particular response.

The Rama fast is kept as on other ekadashis: without grain or legumes, with fruit, milk, and water. Here it is felt as a final touch before Vishnu's awakening on Prabodhini — the last step of Chaturmasya before the return to active life.

In Indian folk practice Rama is a day on which devout Hindus often pray for family well-being and prosperity.

In daily practice

Rama is a day for gratitude for what you already have. If you have the chance to look back on the past year and note what you're grateful for, this day suits that practice.

Rama also suits charity: a gift to the temple, help for those in need, support for those in want. Prosperity here comes through giving, not accumulation.

Rama also suits fasting: fruit, milk, water, light food. The fast here is a sign of cleansing before the close of Chaturmasya.
