The Moon in the natal chart
The Moon in the natal chart is the graha responsible for the mind, emotional memory and the way a person takes in the world. If the Lagna describes the point of entry into the world, the Moon is the inner mechanism: mood, reactivity, what a person lives through between outward events. The basis for reading the Moon in a chart is its sign and nakshatra; the rest (phase, dig bala, its relationship with the Sun) refine the picture.
Place in the system
The Moon is the second of the nine grahas, paired with the Sun: the two luminaries of jyotish. In the natal chart it holds the place of the mind, while the Sun holds the place of will and identity. The Moon's nature is feminine and watery: changeable, receptive, quick to respond to its surroundings. The Moon's sign in a chart shows through which element a person responds to their surroundings and how their emotional background is built.
The Moon's sign is stable for about two and a half days. Unlike the Lagna, which changes roughly every two hours, the Moon crosses one sign in two and a half days. That makes the Moon's position reliable even with an approximately known birth time: a family's spoken memory of "born in the afternoon on March 14" is usually enough to confidently determine the Moon's sign for most practical purposes. The Moon's nakshatra, on the other hand, needs a more precise time: it is a finer division, and the Moon crosses one nakshatra in about a day.
In the structure of the calendar the Moon carries almost everything. Its angle to the Sun gives the tithi, its position on the zodiac the current nakshatra, and each of the two halves of the lunar month is a paksha. Under the Vimshottari system of periods, the Moon rules a ten-year mahadasha, and it is from the natal Moon that Sade Sati — a transit of Saturn through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from it — is counted.
Practical meaning
The Moon shows how a person is built on the inside: what feeds the mind, what they attach to emotionally, how they recover after strain. A strong, waxing Moon is linked to an even mood, good memory and ease in company; a weak one to anxiety, changeability, unsettled thinking. These qualities are the background against which the rest of the chart is read: a person with a watery Moon lives life differently than one with a fiery Moon.
The Moon's sign sets the overall tone of the mind and the way a person reacts. In broad terms, by element: a fiery Moon gives a quick reaction, an earthy Moon steadiness and slow acceptance, an airy Moon a verbal channel, a watery Moon an emotional response. Full descriptions of behavior for each fiery, earthy, airy and watery Moon are in The Moon in the rashis.
The Moon's nakshatra refines the picture within the sign. The same fiery Moon in Aries behaves differently landing in the nakshatra Ashwini than in Bharani or in the first pada of Krittika. The nakshatra adds its own inner shade to the sign: a range of reaction, symbols of behavior, a way of acting. The full meaning of a placement unfolds in the pairing of "sign + nakshatra."
In daily practice
The Moon is the main hand on the clock for reading a single day. It moves through the zodiac faster than the other grahas and so sets the daily rhythm. The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana of the day are counted from the transiting positions of the Moon and the Sun; personal adjustments rest on the natal Moon — Chandra Bala (the strength of the transiting Moon relative to your natal Moon), Tara Bala counted from your nakshatra, and Chandrashtama — the eighth sign from the natal Moon — treated as a day of inner low.
The natal Moon also matters for periods. Mahadashas and antardashas of the Moon or of planets friendly to it tend to pass more gently; periods of hostile planets are tenser. The specific quality of a period is decided together with several other factors: natural and temporal friendship, the planet's placement in the chart, dig bala and aspects. A long pressure on the Moon in transit is Sade Sati: seven and a half years of Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon. Knowing your Moon's sign lets you see the phases of this transit ahead of time.
The series The Moon in the rashis, within the "Natal chart" section, describes the twelve variants of the Moon's placement by sign; the series The Moon in the nakshatras describes the twenty-seven variants by birth nakshatra.
Connections to other chart indicators
The Moon and the Lagna are two different factors in a chart. The Lagna shows outward presentation and the body, the Moon the mind and the emotional background. The Moon's sign is sensitive to the birth date (stable within 2.5 days), the Lagna's sign to the time (stable within two hours). With an imprecise birth time, the Moon's sign stays reliable almost always, its nakshatra is reliable unless the birth falls right at the boundary of a transition, while the Lagna is not.
The Moon is connected to the Arudha Lagna — a derived sign calculated from the Lagna; the public image (Arudha) rests on outward presentation, while the Moon describes inner life.
The Moon works together with Sade Sati in the system of periods: Saturn's long transits through the signs from the natal Moon are seven and a half years of pressure on the emotional background. Knowing the Moon's sign lets you see the phases of this transit ahead of time.
For daily work with the Moon in the chart, astrologers rely on the personal layer: Tara Bala from your nakshatra, Chandra Bala from your Moon — adjustments to the day's transiting Moon. Unlike the general tithi and nakshatra, these two indicators are personal.
