Krishna Shashthi is sixth tithi of the waning moon.

Krishna Shashthi (Shashthi) — the sixth tithi of the waning moon. By count this is tithi No. 21, and it opens the dark half's second pentad. It belongs to the Nanda class — "joyful" days, favorable for beginnings, celebrations, and pleasant matters. It mirrors Shukla Shashthi but lies in the descending phase. This is Kartikeya's day and the day of Skanda's mother — a special day for mothers and small children.

Place in the system

Tithi is the lunar day, 12° of divergence between the Moon and the Sun. Krishna Shashthi runs sixth in the dark half — krishna paksha, right after Krishna Panchami. This is the first step of the second pentad of descent, and it opens a cycle of festive character in the dark half.

By class, Krishna Shashthi is Nanda. The same class includes Krishna Pratipada and Krishna Ekadashi; their mirror pairs lie in shukla paksha. The Nanda background unfolds here in a specific form: the joy of motherhood and protection.

Krishna Shashthi's deity is Kartikeya (Subramanya, Skanda, Murugan), son of Shiva and Parvati, god of war and, at the same time, protector of children. Tradition also strongly connects Krishna Shashthi with Skanda's mother — either Parvati, or the six Krittikas who nursed the child and gave him his name. Separately, in the eastern Indian tradition, the sixth tithi is connected with Shashthi Devi, protector of children.

Practical meaning

By the classical rules of muhurta, Krishna Shashthi is favorable for building a house, for coronations and taking up office, for travel and trade undertakings, for military and sporting matters. Tradition adds beginning one's education. Worth keeping in mind: in the widely used muhurta list of tithis for marriage (2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13), the sixth does not appear — not every school sets weddings on this tithi.

Krishna Shashthi does not carry a major pan-Indian festival: Skanda Shashthi already belongs to Shukla Shashthi. The waning tithi here reads as a day of family connection — Kartikeya's and his mothers' — without a festival attachment.

The Nanda background unfolds here through family warmth: on Kartikeya's day and his mothers', the bond between parents and children, between the older and younger generations, is strengthened.

In daily practice

Krishna Shashthi is a day for family matters. It is good to spend time with children, strengthen ties with parents, do something for a home where small ones live. The Nanda background here works through warmth, and this warmth is especially valued in the waning phase.

The day also suits building or setting up a home, starting a long-running family project. Shashthi is favorable for laying a home's foundation in both pakshas — its krishna sister adds weight to the intention here.

Krishna Shashthi also suits physical practice, sport, taking up martial skills. Kartikeya here is an ally of anyone stepping onto a new path.

How much this day is yours is refined by Tara Bala — the count from your birth nakshatra to the one the day falls under. Nanda sets a joyful background, and the personal layer shows whether your today runs through this joy.
