Jyeshtha

Jyeshtha (jyeṣṭhā) is the eighteenth nakshatra; its name means "the eldest", "the foremost". It is lunar mansion No. 18, ruled by Mercury. Jyeshtha is about seniority, responsibility, and the authority that falls to the most experienced.

Place in the system

Jyeshtha occupies 226°40′–240°00′, at the end of Scorpio, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each; it is the last of the Scorpio mansions and closes the watery stretch of the circle. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Mercury, and together with Ashlesha and Revati it forms the trio of "Mercury" nakshatras.

Its end coincides with a gandanta junction at the passage from a water sign to a fire sign, so the last degrees of this nakshatra are considered especially sensitive — this is the threshold before Mula.

Practical meaning

The Brihat Samhita (XV.16) assigns to this mansion great warriors, people noted for lineage, wealth, and fame, thieves, conquering rulers, and commanders. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate. This is a nakshatra of seniority: both the honor and the burden of the one who answers for everyone.

Its strength lies in experience, endurance, and the ability to take charge at a difficult moment. But the same position of the elder carries its reverse side: the weight of responsibility, pride, and the solitude of the one on whom a shared undertaking rests. Jyeshtha teaches one to carry authority with dignity, without abusing it.

In daily practice

When the Moon moves through Jyeshtha, the day is good for taking responsibility, protecting your own, and putting order into matters that need an elder. This is a time to show experience and will, though it is worth guarding against arrogance and exhaustion.

A day under Jyeshtha is a sign that the moment suits taking the lead and bringing something difficult into order.
