Krittika

Krittika (kṛttikā) is the third nakshatra, the one visible in the sky as the Pleiades star cluster. It is lunar mansion No. 3, ruled by the Sun. Krittika is associated with fire, purification, and sharpness: it burns away the excess and cuts off what is unneeded.

Place in the system

Krittika lies across 26°40′–40°00′ and crosses from the end of Aries into the start of Taurus; like every mansion, it divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by the Sun, and together with Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha it forms the trio of "Sun" nakshatras.

This nakshatra sits at the junction of a fire sign and an earth sign, and its dual nature — fire entering fertile earth — makes it both sharp and nourishing at once.

Practical meaning

Krittika's symbol is a blade and a tongue of flame: a force that separates the pure from the impure. The Brihat Samhita (XV.1) assigns to this mansion keepers of the sacred fire, ritual and hymn experts, grammarians, miners, barbers, potters, priests, and astrologers; also white flowers. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

Krittika's character combines heat and clarity. It burns away debris and reveals what is real, which is why it is called the nakshatra of purification: what passes through its fire comes out cleaner and stronger, though the process itself can scorch. Solar rulership gives it directness and dignity: Krittika does not tolerate hypocrisy, tends to speak the truth to a person's face, and takes responsibility for what it says. The mansion's fiery nature is read by tradition as the ability to discern and separate — with the same motion by which flame separates the pure from the dross.

When the Moon moves through Krittika, the day is good for putting things in order, finishing cleanly, cutting away excess, and taking an honest look at where things stand. It is a time for resolve and clearing out — both outward and inward.
