Vaidhriti

Vaidhriti (Vaidhriti) is the twenty-seventh and last of the 27 yogas of the panchanga. By count it's yoga #27, right after Indra, and it closes the cycle. The name comes from the Sanskrit "vaidhriti" — "dividing," "interrupting," "separating." Tradition counts Vaidhriti among the unfavorable yogas: days under it call for caution, especially in relationships; important worldly undertakings are better avoided.

Place in the system

Yoga is the fourth limb of the panchanga, counted by the sum of the longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vaidhriti is last in the 27-part cycle, from 346°40′ to 360° of combined longitude. Right after it, the cycle opens again with Vishkambha, whose opening part is also held unfavorable — two cautious yogas run back to back at the seam of the cycle.

In the muhurta classification, Vaidhriti is counted in the "ashubha" group (unfavorable); the makeup of the shubha/ashubha groups differs between muhurta schools — a general overview is in the yoga section. The connection to division and rupture is the yoga's main note.

Practical meaning

In the tradition of choosing a muhurta, Vaidhriti is held unfavorable for important worldly undertakings: travel, trade dealings, weddings, laying a foundation. Muhurta practice counts Vaidhriti among the yogas that undertakings aren't set on.

The Vaidhriti background works through threads coming apart. This isn't a day when everything goes wrong — tradition reads such a day as a time when what was held together by effort tends to come undone on its own.

In daily practice

Vaidhriti is a day on which it's better not to start anything major. A wedding, a move, a major deal — all of this asks to be moved to the nearest favorable yoga or tithi.

It's good on this day to draw scattered threads back together: talk with people close to you, resolve old-standing frictions, tie a knot around what matters. Vaidhriti doesn't stand in the way of work on the existing — it warns against a fresh rupture.

Vaidhriti also suits the practice of discernment: where separation is unavoidable, it's accepted; where it can be avoided, it's avoided.
