Shukla Tritiya is third tithi of the waxing moon.
Shukla Tritiya (Tritiya) — the third tithi of the waxing moon. By count this is tithi No. 3, and it belongs to the Jaya class — "victorious" days, favorable for confident starts and overcoming obstacles. Classical tradition ties it to Gauri and to the day's active, resolute nature, and in practice it's a day good for lighting something new — laying groundwork, starting, declaring an intention.
Place in the system
Tithi is the lunar day, a 12° divergence between the Moon and the Sun. Shukla Tritiya runs third in the bright half — shukla paksha, right after Shukla Dvitiya. Light is already growing noticeably by this point, and the third tithi takes that growth in as working strength.
By class, Tritiya is Jaya. Shukla Ashtami and Shukla Trayodashi belong to the same class. Jaya tithis are days of resolve and overcoming: whatever needs a firm step falls into their note.
Tritiya's deity is Gauri, Parvati in her benign form. This connection lights up the day's feminine, active, resolute side.
Practical meaning
By the classical rules of muhurta, Tritiya is favorable for haircuts and body care, for creative crafts and work with fire — smithing, pottery, cooking, kiln work. Tradition adds to this matters that call for resolve and pushing past limits: negotiating with a strong counterpart, holding a position, starting a contest, laying a building's foundation.
In popular practice the day also reads as an occasion to direct personal strength into a matter — not just the fire of craft, but resolve of character.
Jaya tithis in general are days when the one who acts wins. They don't promise ease, but they promise support to whoever has made a choice. Timid, wait-and-see plans lose their charge on this day.
In daily practice
Shukla Tritiya is a day of confident beginning. It's good to open what demands courage from you: a new project, a conversation, a transition. Jaya works in your favor here, if you're on your own side.
Practical uses of the day — haircuts and self-care (the classical prohibitions on these fall on other tithis), culinary undertakings, home repair and renewal, creative work. Good for starting physical practice, taking up a new craft, showing initiative in business negotiations.
Tritiya doesn't suit quiet, memorial matters — for that there's Rikta, krishna paksha, and Amavasya. Nor is it a good time to begin long undertakings that need slow accumulation: Purna suits that better.
How much this day is yours is refined by Tara Bala, from your birth nakshatra to the day's nakshatra. Jaya sets a winner's background, and the personal layer shows whether that victory is on your side right now.
