Uttara Phalguni

Uttara Phalguni (uttaraphalgunī) is the twelfth nakshatra, "the later Phalguni." It is lunar mansion No. 12, ruled by the Sun. In the jyotish tradition this is a nakshatra of alliance, agreement, and reliable help — of what binds people together and sustains them for the long term; Vedic schools differ on which deity governs the earlier and the later Phalguni.

Place in the system

Uttara Phalguni occupies 146°40′–160°00′ and crosses from the end of Leo into the start of Virgo, dividing into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by the Sun, and together with Krittika and Uttara Ashadha it forms the trio of "Sun" nakshatras.

The crossing from generous Leo into discerning Virgo gives this nakshatra a combination of warmth and commitment: the joy of the previous mansion here takes the form of responsibility and mutual promises.

Practical meaning

By tradition its symbol is the back legs of a bed: a continuation and support for what was begun earlier. The Brihat Samhita (XV.10) assigns to this mansion kind-hearted, pure, modest, charitable, learned, very wealthy, dutiful, and royal people, as well as heretics; also fine grain. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

By tradition this is a nakshatra of agreement and mutual support: it is strong wherever a relationship needs to be sealed with a commitment and carried through to a lasting result. Solar rulership gives it honesty and a tendency to keep its word, which is why alliances and long-term obligations are entrusted to it.
