Aquarius (Kumbha)

Aquarius (Kumbha) is the eleventh sign of the zodiac, airy and fixed, ruled by Saturn (Shani). It is Saturn's second abode after Capricorn, and the name itself means "pot" or "pitcher"; the sign's symbol is a water-bearer with a vessel. In the timing of a day, Aquarius matters most when the Moon passes through it: the day then takes on a Saturnian coloring of an airy cast — a pull to think in the abstract, hold to a shared cause, and see beyond one's own interest.

Aquarius occupies the arc from 300° to 330°, the eleventh stretch of the zodiac circle. It follows Capricorn in the count of signs, with Pisces beginning right after it. It is an air sign, like Gemini and Libra, and fixed (sthira) — one of the signs that, rather than beginning, hold what's set and see it through.

Its ruler is Saturn, and Aquarius is its second abode: in Capricorn, Saturn rules the earthy, businesslike side; in Aquarius, the airy, intellectual one.
