Prabodhini Ekadashi is the day Vishnu awakens from sleep, ending Chaturmas.

Prabodhini (Prabodhinī) is the ekadashi of shukla paksha in the eighth lunar month, Kartika (October-November). The name comes from the Sanskrit "prabodha" — "awakening." Tradition connects it with Vishnu's awakening after the four-month rest (Chaturmasya). This ekadashi closes the period of the "gods' sleep" and opens the season of weddings and major undertakings.

Place in the system

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the lunar month. Prabodhini falls eleventh in the bright half of Kartika, immediately after Rama — the ekadashi of krishna paksha in the same month, and is held one of the most important ekadashis of the year.

Prabodhini marks Vishnu's awakening from the four-month sleep on the milk ocean. With this awakening the world returns to an active phase: weddings, major undertakings, and important decisions become favorable.

Practical meaning

The Prabodhini fast is favorable for awakening one's inner strength, for beginning a new project, for major life decisions. Tradition connects it with the idea that the Supreme is especially favorable on this day to those beginning important undertakings.

The Prabodhini background works through awakening. After the period of rest (Chaturmasya), this is a day on which inner resources are renewed and ready for a big undertaking.

In Indian folk practice Prabodhini is the start of the wedding and business season. Many important events are planned for the period after Prabodhini, and the ekadashi itself is held a day of particular favor.

In daily practice

Prabodhini is a day for awakening and beginning. If you have a major undertaking set aside during the rest period, this day is a good one to take it up. Tradition holds this day an awakening after a long rest — a fitting moment to return to what was set aside.

Prabodhini also suits spiritual practice: meditation, prayer, reading scripture. Tradition connects what is begun on this day with stability.

Prabodhini opens the wedding and ceremonial season: tradition sets the celebrations themselves for the days after it, while the ekadashi itself remains a day of fasting.
