Vishakha

Vishakha (viśākhā) is the sixteenth nakshatra; its name means "with forked branches". It is lunar mansion No. 16, ruled by Jupiter. Vishakha is about single-mindedness and choice: the fork in the road where strength is gathered for one clear goal.

Place in the system

Vishakha occupies 200°00′–213°20′ and crosses from the end of Libra into the beginning of Scorpio, dividing into four padas of 3°20′ each; three padas fall in Libra and one in Scorpio. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Jupiter, and together with Punarvasu and Purva Bhadrapada it forms the trio of "Jupiter" nakshatras.

The passage from balanced Libra to intense Scorpio gives this nakshatra composure and persistence: Jupiter as ruler adds faith in the goal and a readiness to press toward it through resistance.

Practical meaning

By tradition its symbol is a triumphal arch, the gateway to a goal attained. The Brihat Samhita (XV.14) assigns to this mansion devotees of its paired deities; also red-flowering and red-fruiting trees, sesame, green gram, cotton, black gram, and chickpeas. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

This is a nakshatra of resolve and the final effort: it is strong wherever one must gather oneself and see a plan through. Its strength lies in concentration on the goal, but the same fixation on the result sometimes makes Vishakha impatient and unyielding toward the interests of others. Vishakha's maturity is in carrying a goal through without burning those who walked alongside.
