Papamochani Ekadashi is the one that frees from sins.

Papamochani (Pāpamochanī) is the ekadashi of krishna paksha in the first lunar month, Chaitra (March-April). The name comes from the Sanskrit "pāpa-mochanī" — "the remover of sins." Tradition connects the fast on this day with cleansing accumulated misdeeds and the weight of the past.

Place in the system

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the lunar month. Papamochani falls eleventh in the dark half of Chaitra, immediately before Kamada — the ekadashi of shukla paksha in the same month: ekadashi names follow the purnimanta reckoning, where the dark half of the month precedes the light half. Papamochani closes out the previous year's cycle of ekadashis, and Kamada opens the new one.

The name "remover of sins" is meant plainly here, without a figurative sense. Chaitra is a month of renewal in the Hindu calendar, and Papamochani within it is a point of cleansing before the start of the new yearly cycle.

Practical meaning

The Papamochani fast is favorable for repentance and inner renewal, for cleansing the weight of the past, for a fresh start. Tradition connects this day with release from the burden of past deeds accumulated over the preceding months.

The Papamochani background works through release. It is a day on which what weighs on you is let go. We cannot always change the past, but we can stop being its captive — and this day suits exactly that.

In Indian folk practice Papamochani is a day on which devout Hindus often perform special acts of repentance, asking for forgiveness.

In daily practice

Papamochani is a day of repentance. If you carry something heavy — a grievance, guilt, regret — this day suits quietly letting it go. You can hold a short prayer or meditation in which you symbolically hand over the past.

Papamochani also suits fasting: fruit, milk, water, light food. The fast here is a sign of detachment from what does not belong to you.

Papamochani also suits the practice of forgiveness: asking forgiveness of those you have wronged, and forgiving those who wronged you. Release here comes through honesty with yourself.

How much this day is yours is refined by Tara Bala from your birth nakshatra. Papamochani sets a background of release, and the personal layer shows how far it matches your life today.
