Vishti

Vishti (Vishti) is the seventh and last of the movable karanas, halves of a lunar day in the Indian calendar. A half of a lunar day is called a karana, and Vishti closes their repeating row. Its second, better-known name is Bhadra, and it's the only movable karana with a directly unfavorable reputation: tradition advises not starting important and joyful matters in its hours. So a half-day under Vishti is a window that's routinely avoided when choosing a time for a significant undertaking.

Place in the system

Karana is one of the five limbs of the panchanga, alongside the lunar day tithi, the lunar station nakshatra, the union of luminaries yoga, and the day of the week vara. Each karana equals half a tithi: two of them pass in a single lunar day, and sixty over a full lunar month.

There are only eleven karana names. Seven of them are movable (chara) and repeat over the course of the month, while four are fixed (sthira) and tied to the same halves at the start and end of the month. Vishti closes the movable seven: Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, and Vanija come before it, and after Vishti the circle starts over with Bava. Vishti first falls, each month, on the second half of Shukla Chaturthi, the fourth day of the waxing moon. This seven-part row cycles through eight times over the lunar month, so Vishti returns eight times, and its unfavorable windows are scattered across the whole calendar — from the waxing moon to the waning.

Practical meaning

In muhurta tradition, the first six movable karanas are held workable and generally favorable. Vishti stands apart among them: of all the movable karanas, it alone carries a sharply unfavorable reputation. Under the name Bhadra, its hours are held in muhurta tradition to be a time of obstacles and hindrance, unsuited to benefic undertakings.

The ban concerns above all matters bright and joyful, meant for a long, good outcome. In Vishti's hours, tradition advises against holding a wedding or an engagement, moving into a new home, setting out on a long trip, closing major deals and contracts, making expensive purchases, or starting a new venture.

That said, Vishti's unfavorability isn't total. Matters that are firm, protective, and aimed at removing an obstacle aren't forbidden in its hours by tradition — sometimes they're even held fitting: pursuing a grievance against a wrongdoer, standing up to an opponent, work with fire and weapons, clearing away what's in the way. Tradition describes its nature as cutting and clearing, and for matters where that's exactly what's needed, its window isn't held spoiled. Schools refine the degree of hindrance in two different ways. One line looks at the rashi sign the Moon stands in — that determines whether Bhadra touches earthly matters. The other divides the Vishti stretch itself into parts, and a number of sources hold its closing portion acceptable for matters. Vishti's own hours, like any karana, are read together with the lunar day: tithi sets the day's general character, and karana refines the quality of its half.

In daily practice

A half-day under Vishti isn't the time for an important, joyful start. A wedding, a move, a long trip, a major purchase, signing a contract, opening a venture — tradition will move these to another window during its hours. But for matters where something needs to be stopped, defended, or cleared, Bhadra's window isn't held a hindrance, and is sometimes even preferred — which is why the ban on Vishti is said to concern benefic undertakings, not action in general.

Karana refines the day's picture but doesn't override the other limbs: Vishti is read together with tithi, the day of vara, and the position of the Moon by nakshatra, and when choosing a muhurta, it's looked at last, as a refining touch. If an important undertaking falls on Vishti's window, it's usually shifted to the nearest neighboring karana — there are enough favorable hours in the month, and a solid start is worth waiting for.
