Mercury (Budha) is the graha of speech, intellect and commerce, governing how a person thinks, speaks, calculates and negotiates. Mercury matters wherever the topic is words, deals, study and correspondence: it shows what kind of communication and calculation the day favors. The name "Budha" means "intelligent," "awakened in mind." This is the graha of whatever in a person handles words and numbers: speech and writing, logic and memory, study, negotiation, trade, calculation, mediation. Classical iconography depicts it as youthful — hence its restlessness, curiosity and quick, retentive mind.

Mercury's chief trait is changeability (in Sanskrit it is called chanchala, "fickle"). It has no fixed coloring of its own: it takes on the qualities of whichever graha stands beside it. Next to a benefic planet, Mercury speaks clearly and honestly; next to a malefic one, that same fluency turns into evasion and confusion. That is why it is read not on its own, but by its company.
