Swati

Swati (svāti) is the fifteenth nakshatra; in the dictionary its name means "sword". It is lunar mansion No. 15, ruled by Rahu. Swati is about self-reliance, flexibility, and movement: tradition also reads its name as "the independent one", by a folk etymology (sva, "self").

Place in the system

Swati occupies 186°40′–200°00′, in Libra, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Rahu, and together with Ardra and Shatabhisha it forms the trio of "Rahu" nakshatras.

The airy, balanced sign of Libra gives this nakshatra a pull toward balance and independence, while Rahu as ruler adds mobility and a drive to go its own way without leaning on outside support.

Practical meaning

By tradition its symbol is coral and a young shoot bending in the wind: flexibility, self-reliance, and a taste for freedom. The Brihat Samhita (XV.13) assigns to this mansion merchants, unsteady friends, weak characters, ascetics, and connoisseurs of goods; also birds, beasts, horses, and wind-producing grains. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

This is a nakshatra of independent movement: it values freedom, room to maneuver, and the ability to adapt without losing itself. Its strength lies in flexibility and independence, but the same trait sometimes turns into unsteady attachments and a reluctance to lean on anyone. Swati's maturity is in being free without being alone — keeping ties without giving up self-reliance.
