Mahadasha

Mahadasha is major planetary period of life.

Mahadasha (Mahā-daśā) — a great planetary period in Indian astrology, lasting from 6 to 20 years depending on the planet. The name comes from the Sanskrit "mahā" (great) + "daśā" (period). This is the main level of dashas: every life divides into a sequence of mahadashas, each with its own colouring.

Place in the system

Dasha is the great system of time-based influences in jyotisha. Mahadasha is the main level of this system, lasting years. Below the mahadasha come antardashas — subperiods lasting months.

In Vimshottari the nine mahadashas run in a fixed cycle tied to the birth nakshatra. The full cycle is 120 years, roughly matching the traditional maximum human lifespan.

The entry point into the cycle is the nakshatra of the Moon at birth: the planet ruling that nakshatra becomes the lord of the first mahadasha. For example, if the Moon at birth is in the nakshatra Purva Phalguni (lord — Venus), the person begins life with a partial mahadasha of Venus. The planet that opens the cycle determines which themes will be central in the first decades of life, and which closer to the cycle's end.

The first mahadasha from birth is the exception to the 6–20-year range: it is partial, and its length depends on how much of its nakshatra the Moon had already crossed by the moment of birth. After that, all mahadashas run full-length, in the fixed order of the cycle.

Practical meaning

Mahadasha is the main phase of life in which one planet leads the person. Each mahadasha has its own tasks and lessons: the mahadasha of the Sun foregrounds will and status, of Mars — action and initiative, of Mercury — speech and exchange, of Saturn — discipline, of Venus — creativity and love, of Jupiter — wisdom.

The planet of the current mahadasha dominates for several years and shapes the main events and circumstances of the period.

In Indian folk practice, knowing one's current mahadasha is one of the first questions people ask an astrologer. People plan important matters for favourable mahadashas and try not to start risky undertakings in unfavourable ones.

Even the mahadashas mentioned less often in examples — Rahu (18 years) and Ketu (7 years) — deserve the same attention as the seven classical planets: nodal periods change a life no less noticeably, just through themes of a different kind.

The nine mahadashas

The list below follows the order of the planets, not the order in which the cycle is actually traversed: the true sequence in a person's life is set by Vimshottari and the birth nakshatra.

In daily practice

Mahadasha is a long-running background. Knowing your current mahadasha helps you understand which tendencies dominate your life right now.

Knowing your mahadasha also helps with planning: important matters are easier to start in a favourable mahadasha, while a difficult one calls for focusing on spiritual practice.

Knowing your mahadasha also suits self-knowledge: understanding what lessons the current period carries, and working with them deliberately.

Mahadasha is refined from within — by the antardasha and finer divisions still, and by the position of the ruling planet in the birth chart; the current transit background (gochara) is read alongside it, not instead of it.
