Kamada Ekadashi is the wish-fulfilling Ekadashi, first of the lunar year.
Kamada (Kāmadā) is the ekadashi of shukla paksha in the first lunar month, Chaitra (March-April), and, in this way of counting months, the first ekadashi of the year. The name comes from the Sanskrit "kāmadā" — "the wish-fulfilling." Tradition holds it especially effective for the fulfilment of sincere intentions.
Place in the system
Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of the lunar month. Kamada falls eleventh in the bright half of Chaitra, the month that opens the year in this way of counting. Krishna paksha of the same month belongs to Papamochani, which, by the purnimanta reckoning, precedes Kamada and closes out the previous year's cycle.
Kamada opens the yearly cycle of ekadashis. Tradition holds it a fitting day to formulate a sincere intention for the year.
Practical meaning
The Kamada fast is favorable for clearing the consequences of unwholesome deeds, for restoring one's good name, for setting sincere intentions for the year. Tradition calls it "the wish-fulfilling ekadashi" and links it to Vishnu's particular favor.
In Indian folk practice Kamada is a day on which it is customary to formulate the year's main intention and ask Vishnu for its fulfilment. This is not a substitute for action but an inner launch: the intention sets the tone for the year, and Kamada is held a fitting day for this inner work.
In daily practice
Kamada is a day for sincere intention. If you follow the Hindu tradition, this is a good day to formulate your main wish for the year and carry it in a short prayer. If you don't follow the tradition, it is still a good day for quiet reflection on what matters most to you this year.
Kamada also suits fasting: fruit, milk, water, nuts, light food without grain or legumes.
Kamada also suits purification: repentance for what you wish to set right, forgiveness of those you wish to forgive. Kamada cleanses — both physically and inwardly.
How much this day is yours is refined by Tara Bala from your birth nakshatra. Kamada sets a background of renewal, and the personal layer shows how far it matches your intentions.
