Mrigashira

Mrigashira (mṛgaśiras) is the fifth nakshatra; its name translates as "deer's head." It is lunar mansion No. 5, ruled by Mars. Mrigashira is the nakshatra of searching — gentle, curious, always looking for something new.

Place in the system

Mrigashira occupies 53°20′–66°40′, crossing from the end of Taurus into the start of Gemini, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Mars, and together with Chitra and Dhanishta it forms the trio of "Mars" nakshatras.

The junction of an earth sign and an air sign adds lightness and restlessness to this nakshatra: the energy of Mars does not press down here but drives forward, toward new impressions and searches.

Practical meaning

A deer searching for fresh grass is an exact image of Mrigashira: lightness, curiosity, a pull toward the new and the beautiful. The Brihat Samhita (XV.3) assigns to this mansion forest dwellers, Soma-rite participants, musicians, lovers, and messengers; also fragrances, garments, aquatic products, flowers, fruits, gems, birds, and beasts. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

It is a nakshatra of refined taste, of searching, and of an inquisitive mind that quickly grows bored in one place. Its energy loves choice and variety, but that same trait turns into indecision once it is time to settle on one thing. Mrigashira is valued for inventiveness, charm and a feel for beauty, though its endless search for what is new can get in the way of finishing what it started. That same restless curiosity draws it toward short trips and a change of place.
