Bharani (bharaṇī) is the second nakshatra; its name means "the bearer," "the one who carries." It is lunar mansion No. 2, ruled by Venus. Bharani carries themes of bearing, limit, and endurance — of what must be borne and carried through to the end.
Place in the system
Bharani occupies 13°20′–26°40′, in the middle part of Aries, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Venus, and together with Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha it belongs to the trio of "Venus" nakshatras.
This nakshatra picks up the fiery impulse set by neighboring Ashwini: where Ashwini breaks into motion, Bharani carries and holds what has begun, pushing it through resistance.
Practical meaning
Tradition credits Bharani with the strength of endurance and getting through what is hard. The Brihat Samhita (XV.27) assigns to this mansion people who feed on blood and flesh, cruel people, killers, jailers, assailants, the low-born, and people lacking courage; also cereals. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate. This is a nakshatra of effort and limit, not ease.
Its energy holds and carries things through. Bharani is associated with thresholds and transitions — with what requires passing through a constraint before reaching the other side, and so it teaches responsibility and patience.
