Purva Bhadrapada

Purva Bhadrapada (pūrvabhādrapadā) is the twenty-fifth nakshatra, "the earlier auspicious foot". It is lunar mansion No. 25, ruled by Jupiter. Purva Bhadrapada is about extreme effort, detachment, and the capacity to go against the current.

Place in the system

Purva Bhadrapada occupies 320°00′–333°20′ and crosses from the end of Aquarius into the beginning of Pisces, dividing into four padas of 3°20′ each: three padas lie in Aquarius and one in Pisces. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Jupiter, and together with Punarvasu and Vishakha it forms the trio of "Jupiter" nakshatras.

Its name is "the earlier auspicious foot": together with Uttara Bhadrapada it makes a pair of like-named mansions, the earlier and the later. The mixture of detached Aquarius and compassionate Pisces gives this nakshatra an unusual blend of heat and remoteness: Jupiter as ruler turns its ardor toward ideals and the search for meaning rather than worldly gain.

Practical meaning

The Brihat Samhita (XV.23) assigns to this mansion thieves, cowherds, killers, misers, people in base or fraudulent occupations, those without religious observances, and single-combat fighters. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate. This is a nakshatra of ascetic effort and strong, uncompromising impulses.

Its energy is strained and restless: it reaches for the large, the ideal, the far side of things, and has no patience for half measures. At its best Purva Bhadrapada is an ardent devotee; its reverse side is harshness. The best in Purva Bhadrapada is the ability to turn this tension toward a worthy aim rather than spend it for nothing.
