Punarvasu

Punarvasu (punarvasu) is the seventh nakshatra; its name means "the goods regained," the return of light and prosperity. It is lunar mansion No. 7, ruled by Jupiter. Punarvasu is the nakshatra of renewal, homecoming, and a second chance.

Place in the system

Punarvasu lies across 80°00′–93°20′ and crosses from the end of Gemini into the start of Cancer, dividing into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Jupiter, and together with Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada it forms the trio of "Jupiter" nakshatras.

The crossing into a water sign gives this nakshatra softness and a pull toward home. Jupiter's rulership adds breadth and goodwill — Punarvasu forgives easily and starts over.

Practical meaning

By tradition Punarvasu's symbol is a quiver of arrows: a reserve you can always return to. The Brihat Samhita (XV.5) assigns to this mansion truthful, generous, pure, high-born, handsome, intelligent, famous, and wealthy people; merchants, servants, and artisans; also the finest cereals. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

This is a nakshatra of renewal: after a decline, it restores strength and faith in a better outcome. Its strength lies in the ability to try again without bitterness, like an arrow shot out and returned to the quiver for another shot.
