Gochara

Sanskrit: Gochara

Type
Concepts

Gochara is transit of planets relative to the natal chart.

Gochara (Gochara) — the current transiting position of the planets in the zodiac signs. The name comes from the Sanskrit "go" (go, cow; figuratively — a grazing ground, a sphere of motion) + "cara" (course, motion): "the ground over which a planet passes." This is the most common tool of jyotisha for reading the current moment.

Place in the system

Transits describe the current position of the planets in the sky and their motion relative to the chart. Gochara is each planet's current position in the zodiac signs, which changes at different speeds: the Moon crosses a sign in about 2¼ days, Saturn (Shani) — in about 2.5 years.

The classical reading of gochara counts houses from the sign of the natal Moon (janma-rashi, "the sign of birth"): Shani in the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon gives Sade Sati; Guru in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th from the Moon gives a favourable combination known as guru-bala, "the strength of Guru." The second count in use is from the Lagna.

Practical meaning

The gochara background changes daily: when the topic is the current moment, it's the first thing people look to.

In Indian folk practice, Gochara is the basis of any daily or weekly forecast. When people say "Mars is in your sign right now," they mean gochara specifically.

In daily practice

Gochara is an everyday tool. Look at where each planet is right now, especially the slow ones (Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu). That gives you the main background of your period.

Gochara also suits planning: matters that need a particular planet's support are easier to start during its favourable transit.

Gochara also suits assessing favourability: the classical gochara-phala reading counts it by house from the natal Moon — for Shani and Mangala (Mars), only houses 3, 6, and 11 are favourable. Strict tradition adds the rule of vedha — cancelling points at which a favourable transit doesn't take effect; softer modern tables treat some houses as neutral.

Just how much Gochara is yours personally is refined by Tara Bala. Gochara sets the general planetary background, and the personal layer shows how far it matches your life today.
