Ardra is nakshatra of renewal through upheaval.

Ardra (ārdrā) is the sixth nakshatra; its name means "moist." It is lunar mansion No. 6, ruled by Rahu. Ardra is associated with storm and renewal: with tears and rain that wash clean and bring new growth.

Place in the system

Ardra occupies 66°40′–80°00′, in Gemini, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Rahu, and together with Swati and Shatabhisha it belongs to the trio of "Rahu" nakshatras.

This is the nakshatra where accumulated tension discharges as a downpour. Rahu as ruler heightens its unpredictability and its pull toward sharp, turning-point changes.

Practical meaning

By tradition Ardra's symbol is a teardrop and a head: an image of what washes clean and transforms. The Brihat Samhita (XV.4) assigns to this mansion executioners, hunters, liars, adulterers, thieves, rogues, sowers of discord, cruel people, charmers, and sorcerers; also cereals. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

Its energy purifies through upheaval: after the storm the air becomes cleaner, and growth begins. Ardra teaches how to move through a crisis without clinging to what came before — its trials are painful but open the way to something new. That is why it is connected not only with destruction but also with breakthroughs of thought and a passion for inquiry: the same storm that frightens also clears the mind and washes away the illusions that blocked clear sight. Ardra is associated with passing through crisis; tradition emphasizes not the outcome but the manner of passing through it, without clinging to what came before.

In daily practice

When the Moon moves through Ardra, the day tends to be restless and eventful; it suits dealing with what has long been brewing, releasing tension, and clearing ground. Sharp, decisive work and persistent searching suit it better than delicate, fragile beginnings.

How favorable such a day is for you personally is refined by Tara Bala from your birth nakshatra. Tradition reads a day of Ardra as restless: irreversible decisions are better postponed on such a day — in a storm it is easy to mistake what matters most for what does not.
