Rohini

Rohini (rohiṇī) is the fourth nakshatra; its name means "red," "growing." It is lunar mansion No. 4, ruled by the Moon. Its themes are growth, fertility, beauty, and warm attachment, and lunar rulership is felt especially clearly here.

Place in the system

Rohini occupies 40°00′–53°20′, at the heart of Taurus, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by the Moon, and together with Hasta and Shravana it belongs to the trio of "Moon" nakshatras.

Set in a stable, fertile sign, this nakshatra is connected with everything that ripens and bears fruit. It is no accident that the Moon rules it directly: Rohini responds especially strongly to lunar softness and the pull toward comfort.

Practical meaning

Rohini's symbol is a cart: an image of accumulation and prosperity. The Brihat Samhita (XV.2) assigns to this mansion observers of vows, merchants, rulers, wealthy people, yogins, cart drivers, farmers, and officials; also cattle, aquatic animals, and mountains. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

This is a nakshatra of comfort, abundance, and sensual pleasure, in which everything strives to grow and ripen. Its strength lies in the ability to cultivate and attract, but that same attachment to what is pleasant also makes Rohini prone to possessiveness. That is why it is connected with the arts, fertility, and maternal care — with everything that gives life form, flavor, and beauty, and with which it can be hard to say "enough."
