Chitra

Chitra (citrā) is the fourteenth nakshatra; its name means "bright," "patterned." It is lunar mansion No. 14, ruled by Mars. Chitra is about the beauty of form, craftsmanship, and brilliance: everything made with art and everything that shines.

Place in the system

Chitra occupies 173°20′–186°40′ and crosses from the end of Virgo into the start of Libra, dividing into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Mars, and together with Mrigashira and Dhanishta it forms the trio of "Mars" nakshatras.

The junction of practical Virgo and harmonious Libra gives this nakshatra a union of precise craft and a feel for beauty: Mars as ruler adds the energy of creation and a drive to bring form to perfection.

Practical meaning

By tradition its symbol is a pearl: perfection cut by a master's hand. The Brihat Samhita (XV.12) assigns to this mansion jewellers, gem examiners, dyers, painters, writers, singers, perfumers, mathematicians, weavers, and eye surgeons; also royal grain. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate.

This is a nakshatra of the maker and the artist: it gives things an expressive, memorable form. Its strength lies in the ability to create what is beautiful and striking, but that same pull toward brilliance can also turn into admiring surface over substance. Chitra shows its best side when craft serves an idea, and beauty does not replace substance but expresses it.
