Vimshottari is the 120-year system of planetary periods.
Vimshottari (Viṁśottarī) — the primary system of planetary periods in Indian astrology. The name is built from the Sanskrit "viṃśati" (twenty), "uttara" (beyond), and "śata" (hundred): "a hundred, and twenty beyond it" — that is, a 120-year cycle. This is the most common dasha in jyotisha.
Place in the system
Dasha is the system of great planetary periods. Vimshottari is the main system, dividing life into nine mahadashas and a multitude of antardashas.
The nine mahadashas of Vimshottari follow a fixed cycle tied to the birth nakshatra (the order below starts with Ketu, matching the example that follows):
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
The total is 120 years. The first mahadasha after birth is the mahadasha of the lord of the Moon's birth nakshatra, and it is partial: its length equals the planet's full term multiplied by the unelapsed fraction of the nakshatra. For example, if the Moon had crossed a quarter of Ashwini by birth (lord — Ketu, 7 years), the first mahadasha of Ketu lasts 7 × 0.75 ≈ 5 years 3 months. After that the mahadashas run full-length, in the cycle's fixed order.
The year used in the Vimshottari calculation is sidereal (about 365.2564 solar days, tied to the passage of the stars rather than the calendar), so "120 years" is a teaching approximation; the precise calculation differs slightly from 120 Gregorian years.
Practical meaning
Vimshottari is a practical tool for long-term planning. It is the primary and most widely used dasha system; most Indian astrologers work with it above all others.
Each Vimshottari mahadasha is an epoch of life in which a particular planet leads the person. Knowing the current mahadasha helps you understand what tasks are at hand now.
In Indian folk practice, Vimshottari is the default tool. When people say "I'm in my Jupiter mahadasha right now," they mean Vimshottari specifically.
In daily practice
Vimshottari is the foundation of life planning. Knowing your current mahadasha helps you understand which tendencies dominate right now.
Vimshottari also suits planning: matters that call for particular qualities are easier to start in the mahadasha suited to them.
Vimshottari also suits self-knowledge: understanding what lessons the current period carries.
