Ashwini

Ashwini (aśvinī) is the first of the 27 nakshatras; its name is connected with horses and riders. It is lunar mansion No. 1, ruled by Ketu. Ashwini opens the zodiac, and it carries a strong motif of a fast start, movement, and healing.

Place in the system

Ashwini occupies the first 13°20′ of the circle, right at the start of Aries, and divides into four padas of 3°20′ each. In the Vimshottari system it is ruled by Ketu, and together with Magha and Mula it forms the trio of "Ketu" nakshatras. In traditional readings it stands for a beginning: something done for the first time, quickly and without long preparation.

As the first nakshatra, Ashwini carries the impulse that starts everything. Its start coincides with a gandanta junction at the transition from the last mansion of the previous circle, so Ashwini's first degrees are considered especially sensitive.

Practical meaning

Tradition connects Ashwini with speed, healing, and travel. The Brihat Samhita (XV.26) assigns to this mansion horse dealers, commanders, physicians, attendants, riders, merchants, handsome people, and grooms; also horses. This is a recurring theme of the mansion, not a portrait of any one person: classical lists describe tendencies, not fate. By tradition its symbol is a horse's head, underscoring impulse, speed, and readiness to set off.

By tradition this is a favorable nakshatra for beginnings, but its strength lies in the initial push, not in patience. Ashwini is strong wherever a quick response is needed, a new venture is opened, or help must arrive fast. Ketu as ruler adds detachment and intuitive precision: Ashwini acts almost instinctively, without spending time on long deliberation, and is therefore especially strong in urgent matters.

In daily practice

When the Moon moves through Ashwini, the day is good for beginnings, short trips, healing, and anything that calls for a quick response. It is a favorable moment to take the first step or move something stuck, and less suited to painstaking work that needs sustained attention.
